On September 28, 1968, 6 visionaries sought out to establish a chapter that would embody an unconditional commitment to the Memphis community, impact the lives of the University of Memphis student body, and epitomize Alpha Kappa Alpha’s illustrious ideals of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. These six elegant and distinguished founders: Ann Benson, Juanita Chambers, Edna S. Gentry, Elma Mardis, Ethel Perkins, and Helen Shelby (assisted by Velma Jones) were chosen to fulfill their quest and charter the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated The Epsilon Epsilon Chapter has been dedicated to service and excellence and since its inception has achieved recognition for its extensive involvement on campus and in the community. One of the first endeavors for Epsilon Epsilon was to address the vital concerns of the black community and raise money for the Sickle Cell Foundation. The ladies of Epsilon Epsilon also sponsored the Pink and Green Ball, in which proceeds were donated to various non-profit organizations. The chapter also held the distinction of having the highest GPA among all Greeks on campus which continues today. In keeping with the prestige of the organization, the members of Epsilon Epsilon have continued to demonstrate high scholastic achievement while remaining supreme in service to all mankind. The elegant ladies of the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter have contributed to the community by volunteering in numerous community centers, schools such as Lincoln and Southpark elementary, nursing homes such as Wesley Highland Manor, as well as involvement in coordinating and implementing activities that address economic, artistic and health awareness issues. Significant acts of servitude also include monetary contributions such as the Chandra F. Pleasant Scholarship Fund, and other charitable donations. As the future approaches, the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha will proudly continue to strive and uphold the exceptional legacy of this elegant and excellent organization. |
